Prostate may be examined with ultrasound across the stomach and with the full bladder, but the image obtained that way is usually poor one. The best image is obtained by inserting a thin probe of the ultrasound machine into the rectum for a couple of centimeters and placing it directly on the prostate. Such type of examination is known as prostate ultrasound. The image obtained that way is excellent, showing all the changes in prostate, urethra, bladder, and seminal vesicles.
Transrectal prostate ultrasound (TRUS) is the part of the triad of early prostate cancer diagnosis also including:
- digital rectal examination of the prostate
- determining prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
It is important to mention that elevation of PSA does not always imply the prostate cancer existence since the elevation may occur due to the prostate inflammation or an extremely large prostate as a result of benign prostatic hyperplasia. On the other hand, there have been patients with normal PSA values, but with a prostate cancer. That is why other examinations need to be performed in order to draw conclusions.
If there are any doubts, biopsy of prostate is performed. Prostate biopsy is “nearly painless”, which means that there is no pain except for the fact that the examination itself is uncomfortable. Sampling is performed with a special prostate biopsy “gun”- a device whose needle takes a prostate tissue sample in a tenth of a second.
Prostate cancer is of the most common cancers in men and its frequency increases with age. Since the method itself is harmless and painless, we advise our patients to undergo a preventive transrectal prostate ultrasound for the early diagnosis of changes and prevention of further disease development.
